Development

The ExAC is prepared in accordance with Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing1, a document recognized by the International Test Commission and in several countries including Canada.

Throughout the development process, the teams of architects tasked with designing and validating the exam are assisted by consultants in statistical test analysis.

These teams:

  • Develop and update the exam objectives, which are outlined in the ExAC Preparation Guide
  • Write and update the exam questions based on the specific objectives
  • Validate each question to ensure that its content is appropriate for all provinces and territories, as well as for clarity, level of difficulty and adherence to the objectives
  • Test the questions
  • Gather data on the quality of the questions
  • Conduct a standard setting procedure to establish the passing score for each of the four exam sections
